Spread that sheet — Free online PDF book spread maker

Spread that sheet is a free, browser-based tool that turns single-page PDFs into realistic book spreads. Upload a PDF where each page is an individual leaf, and the app pairs them side by side — left and right — simulating how they would appear in a physical open book. No installation, no sign-up, no upload to any server. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Create realistic book spreads from PDF

Whether you are a graphic designer preparing a portfolio presentation, a self-publisher previewing a book layout, or a print professional checking impositions, this tool generates high-quality double-page spreads ready for export. The output closely resembles what a flatbed scanner would produce when scanning an open book — with natural gutter shadows, page curvature, and visible page edges.

Features

  • Gutter shadow — Adjustable shadow gradient at the center of each spread, simulating the shadow cast by a book binding. Control intensity, maximum and minimum width independently.
  • Page margins — Simulates the stack of pages visible when a book lies flat. Margins gradually darken from inner to outer edge, with adjustable width, darkness range, and height shrink for realistic page fanning.
  • Page warp and curvature — Pages compress vertically near the spine, mimicking how paper bends into the binding. Adjustable compression depth and flat zone percentage for natural-looking curvature.
  • Paper texture overlay — Apply realistic paper textures to simulate the physical surface of printed paper. Choose from built-in textures, use a solid color tint, or upload a custom texture. The texture blends with page content based on pixel brightness — lighter areas receive more texture, darker areas less.
  • Page transparency — Makes pages semi-transparent so content from the reverse side bleeds through, simulating thin paper where ink shows from behind.
  • Page outline — A configurable border around each page with adjustable thickness and color.
  • Canvas wrapper — Place spreads on a larger canvas with custom background color (or transparent), configurable dimensions, and a drop shadow for presentation-ready output.
  • Cover pages and board expansion — Treat the first and last pages as standalone covers. Add hardcover board expansion on three or four sides with adjustable darkness, simulating a book cover binding.
  • Multiple PDF support — Load multiple PDF files and merge them into a single page flow with configurable page ranges. Covers are auto-detected for files with four pages or fewer. Ideal for combining a cover file with an interior file.
  • Per-page exceptions — Override texture and transparency settings for specific page ranges. When using multiple PDFs, exceptions are auto-created per file.
  • Export as PDF, PNG, or JPG — All spreads are rendered at full 300 DPI quality regardless of preview mode. Export the complete book as a multi-page PDF, a ZIP of PNG images, or a ZIP of JPG images.
  • Save and load settings profiles — Save all current settings as a reusable profile file and load it on any other PDF.

How it works

Load a single PDF or multiple PDFs using the upload button. The app reads each page and pairs them into double-page spreads following standard book pagination. Adjust shadow depth, margin width, page curvature, paper texture, transparency, and all other settings from the sidebar. Preview the result in real time with fast, medium, or full rendering modes. When satisfied, export the final spreads at full quality.

Flatbed scanner effect

The combination of gutter shadow, page curvature, margin darkening, and paper texture produces an effect very similar to scanning an open book on a flatbed scanner. This makes Spread that sheet ideal for creating realistic book mockups, digital previews of printed publications, and presentation-ready visuals of editorial layouts — all without needing a physical copy or a scanner.

Who is it for

Graphic designers, book designers, self-publishers, editorial professionals, print production specialists, portfolio designers, and anyone who needs to visualize how single PDF pages would look as open book spreads. Useful for book mockups, client presentations, portfolio showcases, print previews, and digital publishing workflows.
